In Greece, olive oil is not an ingredient – it is a culture. It anoints newborns at baptism, lights icons in
chapels, dresses bread at almost every meal, and ties together generations of family memory. To
taste Greek olive oils side by side is to taste the country itself: its soils, its sun, its careful, patient
agriculture.
Halkidiki sits at the heart of this tradition. The native Halkidiki olive variety, with its large, elegant
fruit and balanced character, produces oils that are at once grassy, slightly peppery, and full of
sunshine. At Simantro Resort, we like to introduce our guests to this world the way it should be
introduced – slowly, sensorially, and with the producers’ own stories behind every bottle.
How to Taste Olive Oil Like a Professional
A proper olive oil tasting follows a sequence similar to a wine tasting, designed to bring every detail
to the surface.
Four Local Producers Worth Knowing
Kelli by A33 – A Modern Take
Kelli by A33 brings a contemporary aesthetic to the Halkidiki variety. The producers combine
traditional cultivation with precise modern processing to create an extra virgin oil that is as polished
in the bottle as it is on the palate.
Terra Azapiko – Sithonia in a Bottle
Terra Azapiko produces small, carefully selected batches from the Sithonia peninsula, just across the
bay. The oil is authentic and unmistakably terroir-driven – ideal for guests who want to taste a
single, very specific place.
Halkidiki Olive Oils – Family Tradition in Vrastama
This family-run mill in Vrastama, near Polygyros, packages extra virgin olive oil with a strong focus on
purity and traceability. It is the kind of producer that connects the dots between the grove, the press
and the table in the most transparent way.
Galano Metangitsiou – A Mild, Fruity Classic
Galano Metangitsiou is a pure expression of the Halkidiki variety, with a mild and fruity profile that
flatters almost every dish. It is the oil to bring home to a friend who is still learning to love Greek
cuisine.
Tasting at Simantro
Our team can arrange a guided olive oil tasting on site, complete with bread, tomatoes, olives and
fresh herbs from the garden. For guests who want to go deeper, we are also delighted to introduce
you to the producers themselves, with curated visits to selected mills and groves across Halkidiki.
“For me, olive oil is the foundation of Greek cuisine. It is the ingredient that brings
together simplicity and flavour, elevating even the most modest dish. In our kitchen, we
carefully select olive oils from the region, with deep respect for the producers and the
land, allowing our guests to experience through taste one of the most essential elements
of the Greek culinary tradition.”
— Fanis Megarchiotis I Chef, Simantro Resort
Whether you take home a single bottle as a souvenir or fall in love with three at once, an olive oil
tasting at Simantro is a small, perfect way to carry Halkidiki back into your everyday kitchen.
